How to align with the Energies of Spring?
After the dull and dark winter days, spring is finally here. We can enjoy more light, as the days are getting longer and bath in the life giving sunshine. It is the season of new beginnings. It’s about the seeds, which germinate and start pushing up through the soil and then grow into gorgeous plants, flowers. As nature going through these very visible changes we are also transitioning. Our being is adjusting on every level.
What is spring fatigue?
Our body follows the changes of the seasons. In winter as we slow down our hormone levels are changing: our serotonin and dopamine levels drop and cortisol level gets higher, which results in mood changes, us becoming less motivated and more stressed… We nourish ourselves more by eating heavy, sugary and spicy food to keep our body warm, and also we tend to sleep more.
When spring sprung the temperature raises, we feel the need for becoming more active and our body is trying to keep up with the increased energy demand. When trying to switch to higher gears suddenly we realise how tired actually we are.
WALK, EXERCISE – to ground your energies and strengthen your lungs
If you think about the 5 elements spring belongs to Wood energy. It’s time to ground yourself by spending more time outdoors, taking walks in the countryside, gardening and connecting with the Earth’s energies. They are nourishing us, energising us with warming beautiful vibrations.
Exercise – especially in spring it’s very important to do daily physical exercises until you break sweat. By doing so, you are strengthening your lung energy, which balances out the increased energy of your liver, which is strong in spring. People do tend to cough a lot this time of the year, which is caused by strong liver energy i.e. your lung is trying to balance it out, but not strong enough to do so. Therefore try to use your breath to strengthen your lungs. It has many other benefits too.
BREATHE – to release stress and energise your body
Usually we take our breath for granted, until we actually run out of it, because of an illness, strenuous physical exercise… Just because you are breathing it doesn’t mean you are doing it the right way. Breathing properly is actually an art. Since I have become a Qi Gong for Health Teacher I realised how true it is. At least half of my students breathe the wrong way when we meet, which can put extra pressure to their heart, causing dizziness, and weakened lung energy.
To strengthen your lungs just step outside to your garden and breathe deeply, and gently for a few minutes or if it’s not possible open the windows and do breathing exercises at home.
Breathing is an all round magical tool, and it’s always with you. It helps to release built up stress from your body and calms you down. Here is a very effective Nourishing Qi Gong exercise. Qi Gong is an amazing self-healing art, which combines breathing, intention, gentle exercises and a meditative state of mind, which nourishes your being, boosts your immune system, provides you with an energy boost, emotional balance and a lot more.
“I am calm, relaxed” – breathing exercise
This exercise combines positive affirmations and breath to release stress and relax your mind and body. By placing your tongue behind your upper teeth you are connecting your two main meridian lines (energy highways), which helps the energy flow. So here is the exercise step-by-step:
- Take a seated position and close your eyes.
- Place the tip of your tongue behind your upper teeth, Breathe in, whilst thinking “I am”
- Keep your tongue in position, Hold your breath, whilst thinking “Calm”
- Then drop your tongue down and Breathe out, thinking “Relaxed”
- Repeat step 2 -4 a few times
- Then slowly come back to the room and open your eyes.

BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF – rest and eat well to nourish your body
Your body is just waking up after the winter months, so be gentle with it. Rest, take a nap, when you can, and try to have a good night sleep.
Fortify your body with Vitamins and the right nutrition. You need to lessen your sugar intake and eat less spicy food to take the pressure off your liver. Eat more vegetables, basil garlic, onion, which are helpful for your liver and benefit your other organs too…
